Beginners Wheel Throwing 2026 - 6 Sessions (Tuesday Nights)
(New 2026 dates: Evenings March 10th -April 14th 2026)
This small, hands-on workshop is designed for complete beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing in a calm, supportive environment.
Rather than focusing on specific objects or guaranteed results, this course emphasizes understanding clay behavior, process, and technique. Wheel throwing is a skill that develops with time and repetition, and our goal is to give you strong foundations that will support your future practice.
You’ll work alongside up to five other students, allowing for close guidance and individualized feedback throughout the course.
What this workshop focuses on
Learning the basic steps of wheel throwing: centering, opening, pulling, and trimming
Developing sensitivity to how clay moves, resists, and responds
Building confidence at the wheel through guided practice
Understanding common challenges beginners face — and how to work through them
Many people ask, “What will we make?” or “How many pieces will I make?”
While most students complete approximately four finished pieces, the real value of this workshop lies in what you learn, not in how many objects you take home. It’s very normal for early results to feel imperfect — and that’s part of the learning process we’ll support you through.
Practical details
Each class runs for 2.5 hours, followed by 30 minutes of shared cleanup
Tools are provided for use during class
Because tools are shared, care and thorough cleanup are an essential part of each session
One studio glaze is included for each finished piece
You’ll have weekly access to Open Studio time during the course to practice
Water conservation is an important value in our studio, and we work mindfully with resources
A note before enrolling
This is a learning-centered workshop, not a results-driven production class. Some students feel challenged or surprised by how demanding wheel throwing can be at first — this is completely normal. If you’re curious, patient, and willing to learn through practice, this course will give you a solid and meaningful start.
Because the early stages are foundational, it is very important not to miss any of the first three classes, as they establish the core skills used throughout the rest of the workshop. Due to limited capacity, missed classes cannot be made up, and refunds are not available in the case of cancellation.
By the end of the workshop
By the end of the six weeks, participants should expect to understand — even if not yet perform perfectly — the essential processes of wheel throwing, including how to:
center clay on the wheel
throw a basic cylinder
throw a simple bowl
trim finished forms
Participants will also be introduced to basic methods for joining clay parts and to fundamental glazing techniques, gaining an understanding of how these processes work and how they fit into the overall making cycle.
This understanding is the foundation upon which skill, confidence, and personal style are built over time.
If you have any questions or would like to talk through whether this workshop is right for you, please feel free to reach out. We’re happy to help.
The course begins on March 10th and runs on Tuesdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, concluding on April 14th 2026.
Is this workshop right for you?
This course is ideal if you:
are curious about learning how wheel throwing works
enjoy hands-on learning and repetition
are comfortable with early results being imperfect
value process and understanding over immediate outcomes
This workshop may not be the best fit if you are mainly interested in producing specific objects or expect polished results in your first experience.
If you’re unsure, feel free to reach out — we’re happy to help you decide.
