Beginners Wheel Throwing 6 weeks Workshop (Evenings March 11th - April 15th 2025)

Beginners+ Wheel Throwing Workshop

By invitation — please contact us at: info@nvceramics.com before enrolling.

This workshop is designed for students who have completed our Beginners Wheel Throwing workshop and want to continue developing their skills through focused, guided practice.
If you’ve completed a beginners wheel-throwing course elsewhere and are comfortable throwing small cylinders and bowls (up to approximately 1 lb of clay), please contact us at info@nvceramics.com to discuss whether this workshop is a good fit.

Beginners+ is a natural next step after your first experience at the wheel. Rather than introducing many new techniques, this workshop emphasizes refinement, repetition, and individual progression, allowing foundational skills to settle more deeply through practice.

You’ll work in a small group setting, with specific exercises adapted to each participant’s individual progress, so everyone can focus on what they most need at this stage.

What this workshop focuses on

  • Reinforcing centering, opening, pulling, and trimming

  • Improving consistency in basic cylinders and bowls

  • Developing better control, balance, and wall thickness

  • Learning to recognize and correct issues as they arise

  • Building confidence through intentional repetition

This workshop is intentionally repetitive. Repeating the same forms and movements is essential for real improvement, and much of the learning happens through doing, recycling, and doing again.

Materials, tools, and practice

At this stage, participants are expected to bring their own basic pottery tools, as part of developing independence and continuity in practice. Tools may be purchased in our store or sourced elsewhere, according to personal preference. A short recommended tool list will be provided before the workshop begins.

Recycled clay is provided for all class sessions and practice hours, encouraging experimentation and repetition without focusing on finished outcomes.

In addition to regular class time, practice hours are available on Mondays from 1–5 pm and/or Fridays from 11–5 pm. During these sessions, clay will be provided strictly for practice purposes. No pieces made during practice hours will be kept or fired — these sessions are dedicated exclusively to repetition, refinement, and skill-building.

What to expect

Because the focus is on practice and recycling rather than production, participants may finish only one or two pieces by the end of the workshop. This is intentional. At this stage, progress often shows itself more in control, confidence, and fewer collapses than in the number of finished objects.

A note before enrolling

Beginners+ remains a learning-centered workshop, not a production or intermediate course. It is best suited for students who are comfortable with the basics and want time to repeat, refine, and deepen their understanding.

This workshop is designed for students who have completed our Beginners Wheel Throwing workshop. If you have some wheel-throwing experience but do not yet feel ready for an intermediate course, you’re welcome to contact us at info@nvceramics.com to discuss whether this workshop would be a good fit.

Regular attendance is important, as skills build week to week. Due to limited capacity, missed classes cannot be made up, and refunds are not available in the case of cancellation.

The course begins on March 11th and runs on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, concluding on April 15th 2025.
