Bright Gold Luster
Bright gold luster is a decorative overglaze that contains real gold. It’s typically used to accent ceramic wares or jewelry, creating a mirror-like metallic finish that adds elegance and refinement. Since precious metal lusters are applied over already glaze-fired surfaces, they are classified as overglazes. After application, the piece is fired again at a low temperature (see instructions below).
Colorobbia’s Bright Gold Luster brings brilliant, radiant gold accents to your ceramic work, helping you achieve a polished, sophisticated look. With outstanding performance and ease of use, Colorobbia lusters are an excellent choice for ceramic artists of all levels.
Available in: 2 gram jar
How to Use Bright Gold Luster
Important Safety Note:
Work in a well-ventilated area. A vapor respirator is strongly recommended to avoid inhaling potentially irritating fumes.
Prepare the surface: Ensure the piece is clean and free from dust, skin oils, or lotions. Wipe it gently with rubbing alcohol before applying the luster (do not use alcohol on crackle glazes).
Use a dedicated brush: Always apply with a brush used only for gold luster to prevent contamination.
Do not stir or shake the luster before use.
Application: Dispense a small amount onto a glazed palette and apply one even coat. Avoid pooling—brush the luster out smoothly and evenly.
Firing preparation: You may fire the piece while the overglaze is still wet. Use a clean, well-ventilated kiln with a standard firing schedule. Avoid touching the decoration, and handle pieces minimally before firing to prevent smudging.
Firing temperature: Fire to cone 018.
Additional Information
For artists aged 12 and up. Please read all instructions before use.
Overglazes are non-toxic once fired.
Dinnerware safety: Gold-lustered ware is safe for contact with food and drink, but should not be used in microwave ovens.
Care tips: Treat your overglazed pieces like fine china. While they can withstand dishwasher use, frequent washing will eventually wear away the delicate gold layer. Avoid abrasive scrubbing to preserve the finish.
Working with Luster – Special Considerations
Luster overglazes behave differently from standard glazes. Proper ventilation is essential due to the fumes they emit during application and firing. If possible, apply luster under a fume hood. If that’s not available, wear a vapor-filtering respirator and work in a space with good airflow and filtration.
